Field Evaluation of Diesel Particulate Matter Using Portable Elemental Carbon Monitors

چکیده

Regulations on worker exposure to diesel particulate matter (DPM) are becoming increasingly stringent in the mining industry. Due to the complexity and unpredictability of this aerosol, there is a need for new tools to help mines develop an effective strategy to reduce DPM concentrations. To address these needs, NIOSH has developed a portable elemental carbon monitoring device for use in underground mines. These instruments are compact and capable of measuring elemental carbon concentrations in real time. The information that they provide is useful when planning new DPM curtailment strategies or when measuring the effectiveness of existing DPM controls. The following paper discusses a variety of ways that these instruments have been used to help lower DPM concentrations and exposure to DPM in active mines.

Evaluation of a portable photometer for estimating diesel particulate matter concentrations in an underground limestone mine.

A low cost, battery-operated, portable, real-time aerosol analyzer is not available for monitoring diesel particulate matter (DPM) concentrations in underground mines. This study summarizes a field evaluation conducted at an underground limestone mine to evaluate the potential of the TSI AM 510 portable photometer (equipped with a Dorr-Oliver cyclone and 1.0-mum impactor) to qualitatively track...

Real-time estimation of elemental carbon emitted from a diesel engine.

New Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations limit the mass concentration of airborne diesel particulate matter (DPM) or, more specifically, the concentration of elemental carbon (EC), in underground mines. The mine operators are responding by introducing a variety of controls to reduce DPM in the mines, potentially including the evaluation of new maintenance procedures to red...

Near real time monitoring of diesel particulate matter in underground mines

Studies have linked long-term inhalation of diesel exhaust with adverse health effects such as cardiovascular disease, cardiopulmonary disease, and lung cancer. Diesel exhaust levels in underground mines can approach 100 times the environmental level and are therefore monitored closely in the mining industry. Elemental carbon (EC) (a product of diesel combustion commonly referred to as “soot”) ...

Evaluation of the SKC® DPM cassette for monitoring diesel particulate matter in coal minest

In a previous study, the efficacy of commercial and prototype impactors for sampling diesel particulate matter (DPM) in coal mines was investigated. Laboratory and field samples were collected on quartz-fiber filters and analyzed for organic and elemental carbon. Coal dust contributed a minimal amount of elemental carbon when commercial cascade impactors and prototype impactors, designed by the...

Implementation of diesel particulate filter technology in underground metal and nonmetal mines

Achieving substantial reductions in the exposure of underground miners to diesel particulate matter in a number of metal and nonmetal mines in the U.S. depends on the ability of the industry to widely implement advanced diesel emissions control technologies, primarily diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems. Recent field studies showed that diesel particulate filter systems with Cordierite and ...
